Men's Accessories

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-450 -- More Projects »
Style expert Denise Scher shows how accessories can expand a man's wardrobe. It's an easy and inexpensive way to update a wardrobe without having to purchase all new clothes.

The five most important men's accessories are the following: shirt, tie, belt, shoes and socks.

Figure A--Not only is the monochromatic look among the hottest this season, but it truly takes the guesswork out of picking a coordinating outfit. No complaint from men here. If he would like to vary a standard blue-on-blue look, for instance, an option would be to go pattern-on-pattern (see photo). In this case, a very slight, small pattern works well with a tie that carries a larger pattern. The patterns are different, but only slightly, so that it doesn't jar the eye.

Figure B--For a stronger monochromatic look, go with a darker shirt and a textured tie. The crinkled fabric gives the appearance of a pattern, when actually the texture is the pattern. This look enables the wearer to stay within the fashion and yet add some subtle flair at the same time.

Figure C--A high-polished leather slip-on shoe can either be worn conservatively or with a more casual look. With dark pants, stay in the dark, charcoal or navy blue realm when it comes to socks. A belt should have clean, smooth lines with an understated belt buckle. Of course, the shoes and belt should be the same color.

Figure D--When looking to go casual, it isn't necessary to always wear jeans. A khaki pant, brown belt and linen or cotton shirt makes a great Friday casual outfit. A white or cream T-shirt underneath a linen or cotton button-up shirt ads to the sophisticated yet casual look.

Figure E--Although a leather slip-on shoe is more than acceptable as casual, men should consider a more rugged lace-up boot-type shoe in the brown family. There is a little more play with sock selection, which can range from brown to tan to even white or pink.
