TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares a couple of recipes and tips for tasty salad dressings.

French Dressing

Ingredients:

1 small chopped onion
1/2 cup white-wine vinegar
1/2 cup white sugar
1/2 cup ketchup
1/2 cup canola oil
2 tsp. paprika
2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce

Preparation:

Grate the onion for a few seconds to get it started. Place remaining ingredients into a blender. Blend well, chill and serve.

Blue Cheese Dressing

Ingredients:

1/2 cup sour cream
4 oz. cream cheese (half brick)
4 oz. heavy cream
3/4 of 8-oz. pkg. crumbled blue cheese

Preparation:

Place sour cream, cream cheese, heavy cream, blue cheese in a blender. Blend well, chill and serve. To make it thinner, add more cream or some milk.

Tips

  • Combine French and blue cheese dressings for a nice blend of flavors.

  • Make bottled dressings a bit richer by adding a cup of nonfat yogurt. Just pour out the bottle, mix in the yogurt, then pour back into the bottle. You may want to use a funnel to avoid making a mess.

  • Jazz up Italian dressing with a quirt or two of balsamic vinaigrette.
