A whole fish is fresher than one cut into filets, as seafood begins to deteriorate as soon as it's cut up. An ethnic market is a great place to look for whole fish and other seafood items.

Professional cook and author Heather Jansz shows how to make the most of shopping in ethnic markets.

  • Ethnic grocery stores offer a variety of packaged foods, such as Asian soups, which make a nice change for lunch.

  • Many stores offer a wide variety of unique beverages, exotic canned fruits (such as canned bananas) and canned vegetables.

  • Ethnic stores also offer unique hot sauces, chili sauces and soy sauces.

  • Greek grocery stores usually offer a robust selection of olive oils. Buy olive oil in the can and the oil will stay fresher and be more economical.

  • Olives are also going to be fresher at a Greek grocery because the turnover rate is higher. Sample a variety of olives before buying.

  • An ethnic grocery store is a great place to find interesting fresh fruits such as dates.

  • A large assortment of raw nuts and spices can be found in these types of stores.
