Create a portable grill out of a metal wheelbarrow and an oven rack. Simply fill the grill with charcoal and place the oven rack over the charcoal.
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham shares some of her wackiest, gotta-see-it-to-believe-it tips.
  • After cleaning an aquarium, do not throw out the old water. Instead, use it to water the houseplants. It makes a great fertilizer.

  • Use tea to tenderize tough cuts of meat. The tannins in the tea work great for tenderizing meat.

  • Use a nongel toothpaste to clean dirty white leather shoes. Simply rub on the shoe, rinse and wipe the shoes dry. Another tip for shoe care is to use a banana peel to put a quick polish on shoes.

  • Keep splatters under control when making fresh whipped cream by using a shower cap. Poke two holes in a shower cap, wrap it around a bowl containing the cream and insert the beaters through the holes. This also helps when whipping cake batter.

  • A potato will bake quicker if a nail is inserted in it before going into the oven. Be sure to use caution and a potholder when removing the nail.

  • Make a birdhouse out of an old mailbox instead of throwing it away. Just leave the door open and hang the old mailbox in a tree.
