Healthy Comfort Food Ideas

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-362 -- More Projects »
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham and culinary expert Colleen Miner demonstrate healthier ways to cook their favorite comfort foods.
  • Everyone loves mashed potatoes, but if you don't want to pack on the pounds with all the rich sour cream and butter without losing flavor, try adding fat-free chicken broth and bulbs of roasted garlic to Yukon gold potatoes. The consistency of Yukon gold potatoes is creamier than russet.

  • Another low-fat tip for making fattening food such as gravy is to use fat-free chicken or vegetable broth, Worcestershire sauce and flour and whole mushrooms.

  • The next time you make bread pudding, try these substitutes--skim milk in place of whole milk or cream or egg substitute in place of the real eggs. These substitutes won't pack on the pounds and will taste just as good.

  • Everyone's wintertime favorite is soup, but soup can be fattening--especially if you like cream-based chowders. The next time you make your favorite corn chowder, try using a can of evaporated skim milk and creamed corn as a substitute for the heavy cream.
