TIPical Mary Ellen to share some tips with host Mary Ellen Pinkham for making delicious pancakes.
- Sometimes it is good to get a little creative with breakfast. With this in mind, next time you make pancakes, try using cornbread mix. The recipe is right there on the box and they will still taste delicious. Just add cheddar cheese and some scallions to the batter and you'll have a wonderful new taste. In addition, instead of syrup, top the pancakes with sour cream, more cheese and salsa (see photo).
- To make extremely light pancakes, use soda water in place of the usual liquid that is called for in the batter recipe.
- To improve the taste of pancakes, try adding a tablespoon of syrup or vanilla to the batter.
- Use instant gingerbread mix, and again, follow the directions on the box. Children are sure to love them.
- Add fruit or chocolate to the pancake batter.
- Make designs with the pancakes. For example, cook them in cookie cutters.
- When making designs with pancakes, put the batter in at different times to achieve various shades of brown. For example, if you're making a bear, put two drops for the eyes in before the rest and you will have dark brown eyes.
- Use whipped butter and various flavors of syrup for an added touch.
