TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham explains how to prepare homemade cinnamon rolls.
  • Rather than making dough from scratch, buy frozen bread dough. Let the dough thaw, then roll out and sprinkle with cinnamon, sugar, and chopped pecans. Place the rolls in a buttered baking dish, and follow the rising directions from the dough package.

  • Roll up the dough like a jellyroll, then cut into 1-inch thick rounds. Cut the rolled-up dough into the cinnamon roll rounds, using a piece of dental floss. Wrap the floss around the dough, and tighten until a round is cut off.

  • Space the cinnamon rolls evenly in a baking dish, cut-side down. They should then be covered with a towel, and placed in a warm spot to rise. They should grow to be twice their original size before being placed in the oven for baking.

  • A great place to set rolls to rise is the top of the clothes dryer while a load is drying. The mild heat from the dryer will help the rising process.

  • Break any surface bubbles in the cinnamon rolls with a greased toothpick before baking. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes, or until the rolls are a golden brown.

  • Prevent over-browning in the last five to 10 minutes of baking by covering the rolls loosely with aluminum foil.

  • Make the icing to top off the cinnamon rolls by sifting 1-1/4 cups confectioner's sugar and whisking together with two tablespoons milk and 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract until smooth. Place a piece of parchment or wax paper under the wire rack, and drizzle the icing over the top of the cinnamon rolls using a spoon.

  • After baking, remove the cinnamon rolls from the baking dish and place on a wire rack to let cool to room temperature.
