Fresh juices are not only good for you, but they're fun to make!
Chef Andrew Zimmern offers tips for making delicious, healthy juices out of fresh fruits and vegetables.

  • Fresh vegetable juices are a great way to detoxify the body, and many have other healthful uses. Ginger, for instance, can be used to settle an upset stomach.

  • Celery contains chromium, which really helps stimulate your brain. Have a snack of celery sticks for a mid-afternoon pick-me-up.

  • Pineapple contains bromelain, which is useful for breaking down proteins.

  • Mix and match vegetable and fruits to create a juice to satisfy your particular health concerns.

Figure B
  • Keep fresh fruit and vegetable juices fresh by storing them in an insulated container (figure A).

  • Wheatgrass has some incredible healing properties and is best if consumed by itself, rather than blended with other juicers. You'll need to use a specialized wheatgrass juicer to extract the juice (figure B).

  • If you're going to be drinking a lot of fresh juices, you may want to look for organic fruits and vegetables.

  • To offset the bland or sometimes bitter tastes found in certain vegetables, try blending with sweeter fruits.

  • Chef Zimmern recommends a juice made with a small amount of fresh ginger, beets, carrots and apples.
