Outgrown the Starter Home
Homeowners Mary Ann and Tony Diaz have a lot on their plate – two young boys, medical school and they are moving to a bigger house. But, before they move, they have to sell their current home. The family has outgrown the 1,100-square-foot home after having only lived there for three years. The three-bedroom and one-and-a-half- bath, Georgian-style home has lots of charm and should appeal to another young family just starting out.

Host Michael Johnson brings real estate expert Brandi Malay to see the house. The home’s location is an immediate turn-off. A large highway runs right in front of the house and the traffic noise is overwhelming. The rest of the house better be in great shape to overcome this obstacle. Inside, Malay says that she can hear a pin drop –– the noise from the highway is barely audible inside the home –– that's a big plus. Moving on, Malay thinks the all-white kitchen is too stark and there are too many family photos on the fridge. In the master bedroom, the big clunky furniture makes the space feel small. Malay advises the homeowners to declutter and declunk.

Designer Monica Pedersen agrees with Malay’s remarks and has come to the rescue with a $2,000 design plan.

Step 1: Punch up the curb appeal to keep buyers’ attention away from the highway noise.

Step 2: Add color and style to the kitchen with granite, paint and new hardware.

Step 3: Turn the claustrophobic master bedroom into a spacious retreat.

Designed to Sell carpenters Robert North and Chad Lopez are on hand to complete each task.

Kitchen Before
The real estate agent reached for a pair of sunglasses when she walked into this kitchen. She said the white-on-white color scheme was like snow blindness. She also thought the appliances in the toy kitchen were nicer than the real kitchen.
