Time to Upgrade
Homeowner, Art Hollingsworth is ready to sell his 2,000-square-foot, three-bedroom home and upgrade to a new pad. Located in Northeast Washington, D.C., the semi-detached home offers city amenities with a suburban flair. It is close to the metro station and it has a backyard and a front patio. But, the house also desperately needs some design intervention if its going to sell for top dollar. Host Shane Tallent brings real estate expert Shirley Mattam-Male over to check out the house. She likes the unconventional style of the homes exterior and thinks it will add value. On the inside, Mattam-Male finds the half-finished basement to be a major distraction and a missed opportunity. This extra square footage could be valuable living space. Mattam-Male is impressed by the hardwood floors in the dining area, but the open, messy pantry and dead flowers are not hitting the mark. Like the basement, Mattam-Male thinks the patio is not being properly utilized. The space is barren, boring and seriously lacks privacy.
Designer Taniya Nayak has a $2,000 design plan to fix all of Mattam-Males negative findings.
Step 1: Finish the basement and turn it into a fun living space.
.
Step 2: Clean up the dining room then add color and style.
Step 3: Transform the barren patio into a private outdoor oasis.
Contractor Simon Ley and carpenter Lynn Kegan are the skilled pair who will get the job done.
