New Life, New House

Designed to Sell : Episode HDTS-1603 -- More Projects »

Dated, But Darling
Newlyweds Brock and Corina Wharton are in a hurry to buy a new home to kick off their new life together. Before they move forward, they need to sell Corina’s seriously-dated house. The couple has been tackling some home improvement projects on their own to get the place ready to sell. But, from the outside of the house, it looks like they’ve got a long way to go.

Real estate guru Donna Freeman comes by to lend her expert opinion. She calls the front of the house a barren wasteland because of the peeling paint and sparse landscaping. In the living room, Freeman likes the red wall color, but thinks it won’t appeal to a wide range of buyers. Also, the hardwood floors are scratched and scuffed beyond repair. Freeman thinks the wavy mirrors in the dining room are distracting and look dated. The kitchen has Freeman completely aghast. The room is dark, the cabinets are downright depressing, the oven is a bad relic from the 1950s and the washer and dryer are in plain site.

Designer Lisa LaPorta agrees with Freeman’s evaluation and has a $2,000 design plan to update this house and get it sold quickly.

Step 1: Neutralize the color in the living room, fix the floors and get rid of the bulky furniture.

Step 2: Spruce up the dining room with new wall art and lighting.

Step 3: Update the kitchen then build a wall to separate it from the laundry room.

Talented carpenters Deus Scott and Greg Plitt know the plan and are ready to get it done.

Kitchen Before
This kitchen is dated all around, it has got something from nearly every decade. The 1960s cabinets are dreary; the wall oven is so old it is almost an antique, and the florescent lights and flooring look like leftovers from the 1970s. Also, having the washer and dryer out in the open doesn’t help the room’s aesthetic.
