Selling For A Cello
Homeowners Paul Ghica and Adelina Busce need to sell their loft condo for an unusual reason. Paul is currently performing in a string quartet playing the cello. He hopes to move up to performing in an orchestra, and purchasing an 18th century cello will help him get one step closer. What does this have to do with selling the condo? The cello has to be financed and selling their loft will allow Paul to keep his prized possession and hopefully make his musical dreams come true.

Real estate expert Brandi Malay meets up with host Michael Johnson to check out the loft. She says this is one of the hottest neighborhoods in Chicago. Inside, Malay is impressed by the loft’s exposed bricks, timber beams and skyline views. But, the positive first impressions turn sour when Malay inspects the laminate kitchen countertops, old appliances and tacky mirrored backsplash. The dining area is well staged, but it needs more color and personality. It is obvious to Malay that no one lives here because there is no furniture in the master bedroom. She advises painting the walls and adding a nice bedroom set.

Designer Monica Pedersen agrees with Malay’s remarks and has come to the rescue with a $2,000 design plan.

Step 1: Inside the kitchen, replace the solid surfaces, update the cabinets and expand the breakfast bar.

Step 2: Make some cosmetic changes in the dining room to add warmth and style.

Step 3: Turn the barren bedroom into a eye-pleasing master retreat.

Carpenters Robert North and Chad Lopez are on hand and ready to make these lofty changes.

Kitchen Before
This is a very spacious kitchen for a urban, one-bedroom condo. But, the space is dated and does not fit in with the rest of the loft's cool architecture. The mirrored walls and backsplash look tacky, the appliances are old and the laminate countertops and cabinets will do nothing to attract a buyer.
