Congested Condo

A Washington, D.C., couple gets help selling their condo in short order.

Designed to Sell : Episode HDTS-1003 -- More Projects »

Military man Jay Dintaman has just been told that he and wife Dianna will be transferred to Korea, so they need to sell their Washington D.C., condo ASAP. Their two-bedroom place is stuffed with oversize furniture and extreme clutter. They are located in a hip neighborhood that should help sell the place, but with no luck getting takers, they turn to the Designed to Sell team to help get it sold fast!

Real estate expert Terry Haas is on the scene for the initial house assessment. Her first order of business is the living room, where she notes that the dining table is virtually blocked from use. Her eye then goes to the fireplace, whose mantel is serving as an entertainment center. The furnishings in the space are too big and make the living area seem smaller than it really is. Next, it's on to the spare bedroom. She's immediately concerned that instead of seeing a cozy guest room, buyers will see a catchall space with no definitive purpose.

Designer Taniya Nayak signs on to help correct this condo's problems and get it sold in short order. She wants to scale down the living room furniture and make the fireplace a focal point with a TV cabinet. She wants to focus on showcasing the spare bedroom as a guest room by transforming it into a boutique hotel-inspired retreat. Here's how she'll bring her plan to life:

Step 1: Uncover the value. By clearing the clutter from the fireplace and the guest room, buyers will focus on the value of the property.

Step 2: Wide open spaces. Accentuate floor space by scaling down the size of furniture to make rooms look larger.

Step 3: Simplified and sophisticated. Give the home a classic look that will show less personal style and showcase potential.

Carpenters John Allen and Matt Steele are ready to take this condo from cramped to classic in no time.

Living Area Before
The living area once appeared cramped and small. There was too much furniture in the space, and the scale of the pieces only made matters worse.
