Beach Bound

This home needs a shot of sophistication before it hits the market.

Designed to Sell : Episode HDTS-512 -- More Projects »

Kelly Takacs is newly single and ready to sell her current home and get a place on the beach. Can the Designed to Sell team and their $2,000 budget make this house more appealing?

Starting with the exterior, real estate expert Shannon Freeman sees a problem with the barren front yard. Inside, she thinks the living room looks somewhat collegiate and the scale of the furniture is out of step with the size of the room. The room off the kitchen is having an identity crisis and could leave potential buyers wondering how it's supposed to be used. Out back, she determines that the deck and spa look a little worse for the wear.

Design expert Lisa LaPorta comes to Kelly's rescue with a plan to make the house look worthy of potential buyers' budgets. The focus will be on making the inside of the house grow up and turning the outside deck into an additional living area.

Step 1: Graduate in style. Get rid of dorm-style features to make the home worthy of sophisticated offers.

Step 2: Jazz it up. Make bland areas grand.

Step 3: Perk up the patio. Deck out the deck to make it a major selling point.

Carpenters Brooks Utley and Steve Hanneman start by diving in to trim back the brush and give the deck new life.

Living Room Before
Real estate expert Shannon Freeman felt the living room looked collegiate. Having the counter-height dining table in the living room made the other furniture look small and crowded the space.
