Frogs may not be conventional house pets, but they do make for unusual domestic creatures. Maintenance is practically nonexistent, and their size is perfect for small children.
All you need to house a frog is an aquarium tank (10 gallons or larger) with a lid. Since frogs are amphibians they must be kept moist, so be sure to line the tank bed with a moist moss.
Three frogs that make great pets:
- Tree Frog - These small frogs come from Indonesia and Australia. They are known for huge suction cups on their feet, which allow them to cling to leaves way up on trees or just about anything else for that matter. They can jump from leaf to leaf and catch a moth in mid-flight. Their big eyes indicate that they are nocturnal (nighttime) creatures, and they are also known for their keen hearing.
- Horn Frog - From the rainforest of Brazil, these frogs have built-in camouflage for skin. Known to get as big as a saucer, these are one of the few frogs that will bite if irritated, which wouldn't actually hurt. It's more like a little nibble, in fact. Their mouths are extremely large (figure A), and this is why they can eat mice and rats.
- African Bullfrog - This is one of the largest frogs in the world, as well as one of the most distinctly colored - from a lime green to bright orange to pure white. Frogs always look moist but these do in particular because of their skin color. All frogs secrete mucus to keep them from drying out.
If you're looking for something different in the pet department, why not take the leap and consider a frog. They're fun to watch, easy to care for and children love them.
