Guest Kris Higgins returns with some ideas for pet treats and pet repellents for the indoor gardener:
- Keep certain plants--such as catnip or catmint--accessible for your kitty to enjoy. Oat grass also makes a good edible plant for cats, rabbits and guinea pigs.
- Add half a clove of garlic to your dog or cat's food twice a week. The garlic aids digestion, says Higgins, and also acts as a flea repellent.
- Steep some lavender and rosemary leaves in a pot of hot water. When the "tea" has cooled, use it as a rinse for your dog. It will leave his coat shiny and healthy-looking, and help him smell nice too!
A few words of caution:
Two plants in particular--the dieffenbachia and the Chinese evergreen--are toxic to animals and children. Make sure your pets stay away from these plants, and especially from any blooms that may appear.
To keep pets away from your plants, mix some lemon juice with water and place in a spray bottle. Periodically spritz your plants with the mixture--they'll love the humidity, and your pets will avoid the citrus smell.
Another way to keep pets away is to use citrus peelings, cayenne pepper or pine cones as a mulch around your plants.
