If a fine-toothed comb turns up fleas, consult your veterinarian for the proper response.

Pet-care expert Arden Moore provides a lesson on saving money on those vet and groomer bills by doing the work yourself.
  • Convey an air of confidence when grooming your cat. If you feel nervous or jittery, your cat will sense that and respond in kind.

  • A great way to establish a bond with your cat is to give it a massage. This also will help an aloof cat warm up to you. Rub it in much the same way you would a regular massage, but pay attention to the paws, too. The payoff is that the cat won't react as strongly when you hold the paws during grooming.

  • A slicker brush (with very tiny metal bristles) works well for both long- and short-haired breeds. Follow up a brushing with a combing. A fine-tooth comb can is best for flushing out fleas.

  • Clip the claws on a regular basis. Claws that get too long can curl under, snag and tear.

  • If you use an old toenail clipper on your cat, don't use it on you--it belongs to the cat now. Also, keep styptic powder handy when clipping claws. If there is an accident and the nail bleeds, a little powder will stop the bleeding immediately.

  • Always clip claws at a 45-degree angle and just beyond the quick. You won't need to take much off at all. By pressing on the footpad, the claws will protrude more than far enough for a good clipping. You shouldn't have to do this more than twice a month.

  • Check the cat's eyes for any sign of swelling, squinting or discharge.

  • Hairballs are always a problem. An easy solution is to spread just a bit of petroleum jelly on the cat's nose. The cat's instinct is to lick it off, which will help eliminate the hairball. Don't do this more than twice a week.
