Veterinarian Martin Schwartz provides a recipe for dog food that is healthier than manufactured dog food because it is natural and has no preservatives. It is also less expensive than gourmet foods on the market. He suggests making a big batch and freezing it to use as needed.

* Note: Any nutrition store should carry all these products.

Ingredients:

9 cups cooked oatmeal
1-1/2 cups bone meal (for human consumption)
2 cups nutritional brewer's yeast
1/2 cup kelp
100 units of vitamin E
1/4 cup cod-liver oil
1-3/4 cups vegetable oil (safflower oil is preferred)
6 cups potatoes, chopped and cooked
1-2/3 cups mixed vegetables (canned works well)
3 cups lean meat, raw or cooked

Preparation:

Mix all ingredients in a large pot over low heat. Stir thoroughly. Serve in portions consistent with your dog's size.
