Pet Grooming
TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-701 -- More Projects »
Pet groomer Brian Fulmer gives tips on pet grooming.
- When grooming a short-haired dog, use a shedding blade. Always brush from front to back, and apply very little pressure. A lava stone, which is normally used to clean grills, also works well (figure A).
Clean out your dog's ears by first soaking a cotton ball with hydrogen peroxide. Simply hold its ears back and wipe them out with the cotton ball (figure B). This will help guard against infection.
A long-haired dog with a full coat will need to be brushed frequently to prevent matting. Use a slicker brush and/or a steel comb and brush from front to back (figure C). Make sure to brush underneath its legs and behind the ears, where heavy matting occurs.Start brushing your cat or dog at an early age so that they become accustomed to it.
To clean a dog's teeth, simply purchase a plastic-finger toothbrush (figure D) and special pet toothpaste at your local pet-supply store. Gently hold the muzzle and brush the outer edges of the teeth. This should be done twice a week to prevent major plaque buildup.
Use a professional nail clipper (figure E) when cutting your canine companion's nails. Clip no further than where the pink of the nail begins. If you go too far use a little cornstarch or flour to prevent bleeding. A bar of soap will also help if you don't have the other items.
When grooming a short-haired cat, use a metal or fine-toothed comb. Groom with the hair from front to back (figure F). To prevent the cat from sliding, place it on a nonskid shower mat.If you are slightly allergic to cats try bathing your feline friend with a hypoallergenic cat shampoo about once a week.
