What's spring or Easter without the bunny rabbit? These fuzzy, cute little creatures make great pets that require the same amount of care and maintenance as a dog or cat.
Rabbits are social creatures and are best purchased in pairs when possible, but have them spayed or neutered. If you do buy a rabbit, be sure to have a space where it can play and interact with you and your family, and be prepared to care for it like any other type of pet.
These cotton-tailed treasures are gaining popularity as house pets and can even be trained to use a litter box. They are referred to as the "condominium pet" because they are quiet, clean and a perfect fit for a small apartment. Be sure to find a reputable breeder when you begin your search for the perfect rabbit.
Rabbit supplies needed at home
- Cage lined with timothy hay 24/7--Cages should be kept out of drafts, away from predators and out of the weather. They should be kept where there is shade, because rabbits are vulnerable to heat and can get ill if they are not cooled properly.
- Rabbit food--Limit pellet use and combine them with fruits and vegetables. Contrary to some reports, dark leafy greens can be apart of a rabbit's diet. The timothy hay (used for cage liner) also is an excellent source of nutrition. It prevents gastrointestinal statis, which is a serious problem for rabbits on a low-fiber diet.
- Mineral wheel for extra vitamins, but this is not necessary if a proper diet regimen is followed.
- Pumice stone or pine cones to keep the rabbit's teeth, which continually grow, worn down.
* Note: Cedar shavings are NOT a proper bedding/litter liner to use for rabbits because they are known to cause changes in t heir liver enzymes. The full effect of this change on the health of the rabbit it not known yet.
