Administering a pill can be a chore, but a pilling device can help. Just place the tip of the device past the base of the tongue and pop the dispenser.

Veterinarian Bernadine Cruz explains how to care for pets and cure them of common ailments without a trip to the vet.

  • Dogs can be treated with aspirin for aches and pains. This same rule doesn't apply to cats and neither can take other over-the-counter medications such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen. Call your veterinarian to be sure about the dosage.

  • Administering a pill can be a chore, but there are several options. If a dog balks at having its mouth opened and a pill placed on the back of its tongue near its throat, close the mouth and rub the throat to ensure that it is swallowed, or try hiding it in a bit of cream cheese or peanut butter. A pilling device also makes things easier.

  • When traveling with a dog, attach a harness that also works as a seat belt. Cats should always be kept in a pet carrier. Motion-sickness pills are available for pets and work in much the same way as medicines that humans take to avoid getting sick.

  • If a dog is experiencing bad breath, try giving it a piece of raw carrot. This will clean its teeth and mouth and also give it something to chew on. Don't give a dog too many vegetables, though.

  • For an upset stomach, try some giving a dog yogurt. A large dog (60 pounds and above) needs only one tablespoon, while medium dogs (20 to 60 pounds) need one teaspoon. Small dogs (20 pounds or less) need one-half teaspoon. Mix this in with their food.

  • If a dog is constipated, try giving it mixing in bran flakes with its food. This should increase the fiber in its diet and can provide relief.

  • Check into a health-insurance policy for your pet. For only $5 to $6 a month, your pet can experience the same comfort from an accident or bad experience that we can with our own health-insurance policies.
