Hydrotherapy, like a warm swim in the tub, is good for aching pet joints.

Veterinarian Bernadine Cruz says that minor household modifications, a proper diet and supplements can help your pet as it gets older, moves slower and seems increasingly uncomfortable.
  • Cats and dogs over the age of 7 begin to have problems associated with aging.

  • Stairs can be tough for old joints, so try adding pet beds downstairs if you have a two-level home. Placing egg-crate foam underneath the bed adds comfort, as well as a heating pad that is carefully wrapped and kept on a very low temperature.

  • A massage aids circulation and eases aching joints.

  • Long expanses of slick surfaces such as tile and wood can be tricky for your pet to navigate, so try adding area rugs.

  • Station several bowls of waters around the house in the rooms you use most frequently.

  • Elevate the dog bowl to make access more comfortable.

  • Spend a little time each day playing with your pet for gentle exercise.

  • Grooming cats with a brush keeps fur under control.

  • Hydrotherapy--a little swim in a warm tub can help ease the pain of those aching joints. This one obviously works better with dogs than with cats.

  • Provide several small meals throughout the day since older pets can't eat as much at one sitting.

  • Supplement your pet's diet with chopped fruits and vegetables instead of fattening snacks to keep weight down.

  • Keep keeping a diary of trends in your animal's behavior.

  • Older animals should visit the vet twice a year for checkups rather than just once.
