Choosing a Headband

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-746 -- More Projects »
Hairstylist Karen Knopp shows how to choose a headband to fit your particular hairstyle.

  • Elastic headbands are the universal headband--they're appropriate for all hair types and are comfortable. Just pull the headband into place, then style your hair around it.

Figure A
  • Textured, full hair (figure A) works well with scarf-type headbands that tie. Avoid silk because it is slippery. Also good for this hair type are headbands that have long teeth. Place the headband at the beginning of the hairline with the teeth pointing to the back of the head, then gently and lightly pull back so that the hair is securely caught and held.

  • Fine hair can be held in place with a headband that has short, fine teeth.

    Figure C
  • Try placing the headband halfway back on the crown of the head after the hair has been styled (figure B), rather than pulling it back from the forehead.

  • Avoid a tight, pulled-back look when wearing a headband (figure C). Gently comb hair back with your fingers and place or pull the headband into place.
