The cuticle is a barrier between natural skin area and nail plate. Lack of moisture can cause painful hangnails or cracking and splitting. Store-bought remedies typically cost between $5 and $8, but nail expert Lisa Postma shows how to keep cuticles moisturized by making natural conditioning treatments at home.
Fruity Cuticle Softener
Fruit contains alpha hydroxy and is a natural exfoliant, according to Postma. Expect this concoction to last about one week under refrigerated conditions. A little goes a long way, so keep the batches small.
Ingredients:
cantaloupe
egg yolk
lemon juice
Steps:
- Shave a bit of fruit from cantaloupe into a microwave-safe bowl. Put it in the microwave for one minute. This should break down the cantaloupe.
- Stir in an egg yolk and lemon juice for a great cuticle moisturizer.
Egg Yolk & Oil Moisturizer
Oil is terrific for moisturizing the cuticle area. Egg yolks also offer vitamins A and D. This recipe lasts about a month in refrigerated conditions.
Ingredients:
egg yolk
olive oil
vegetable oil
Steps:
- Place egg yolk in a bowl.
- Add in both oils and stir for a terrific, longer-lasting cuticle softener.
Mayonnaise Cuticle Softener
If you're in a time pinch, use mayonnaise straight from the jar as a cuticle softener. Mayonnaise contains both egg and oil, so it has essential ingredients for a cuticle softener.
Vitamin E Capsule Cuticle Softener
If you'd rather save the mayonnaise for your sandwich, here's another option: Try piercing a vitamin E capsule with the end of a straight pin, then squeezing the oil onto your cuticles. Treat your cuticles while you sleep by saturating the nail with oil, and covering your hands with gloves to protect your clothes and pajamas.
