Relieve pressure on the spine by placing a pillow between your knees when lying down.

Chiropractor Claire O'Neill explains how to maintain correct posture during everyday activities.
  • When working at the kitchen counter, place a foot on the inside of the cabinet or on a small stool. This will take pressure off the lower back.

  • Use a small stool when reaching up for things in the kitchen. Many times we tend to overextend our bodies reaching up too high. A stool allows you to reach for things without undue stress.

  • Don't bend at the back when putting dishes in the dishwasher. Pivot your feet so that the toes point away from the sink or cabinet to the open dishwasher door. Squat down and place the item in, then stand straight and pivot the feet back again.

  • When relaxing in a chair, use a pillow to support your back so that you don't slouch. Also, don't cross your legs at the knees, cross them at the ankles.

  • Constantly tilting the head back to drink out of a can or bottle can place strain on the neck muscles and reverberate down the back. Simply place a drinking straw in the opening and keep the head level while drinking.

  • Sleeping on your side is the best way to protect your back. Slip a pillow between the knees to support the lower back. If you sleep on your back, slip a pillow underneath both knees in this position as well.
