Figure B
Designer Cathy Whitlock offers these tips when using natural elements:
  • Start with a piece that makes a great statement like a dark rattan planter. It looks especially exotic with a large palm in it.
  • An iron palm tree lamp with a wicker shade ties in the theme and blends with real palm plants used in a room (figure A).
  • Cinnabar boxes are very attractive and can be stacked for height or used as decorative storage containers (figure A).
  • Hang a tray for artwork on the wall instead of using it as a serving piece.
  • A utility basket provides storage while still lending to the exotic look.
  • An elegant raffia chair with cross-stitched seams is exotic and luxurious, especially when paired with the matching ottoman (figure B). Use a wicker tray on a stand for a side table.
  • To continue an exotic theme throughout a room, mix in palm tree wallpaper or fabrics .
  • Grass cloth looks good on walls as well as accessories.
  • A sisal rug on the floor continues the natural look.
