Red-Hot Lipstick

Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-324 -- More Projects »
Makeup artist Bobbe Joy shows how anyone, regardless of age, race or skin coloring, can wear red lipstick. She offers several rules of thumb to ensure that the correct shade and skin tone matches.
  • Red lipstick makes a bold statement, and it's an attitude more than a color, but the right red can create a look that's unforgettable.

  • Blondes with fair kin should wear a true red color of lipstick. True red goes well with gray clothing.

  • African-Americans should wear a blue-red, burgundy or plum lipstick. This color goes well with navy blue clothing.

  • Asians with olive skin should wear an orange-red lipstick. The color goes well with orange-red clothing.

  • Determine the tone of the skin by one general rule--if skin burns easily in the sun then it's cool toned, and if it turns a nice brown then it's warm toned.

  • Red lipstick can be worn any time--day or night. If it's worn in the daytime, wear lighter, minimal makeup on the rest of the face.

  • Do not wear red lipstick with clothes that are hot pink, peach or baby blue. Choose colors that complement the undertones in the lipstick, but above all, keep it simple.
