When using an eyelash curler, be sure to pinch the eyelashes, not the eyelid.
Beauty expert Stacy Cox points out what is really necessary when it comes to makeup tools.
  • The eyelash curler is sometimes mistaken as an instrument of pain. The key is to avoid the eyelid. Grab only the tails of the eyelashes and depress for a count of 10. This is especially helpful to the Asian eye, which has long eyelashes that normally grow down instead of up.

  • A plastic eyelash curler can be heated for a few moments with a hair dryer to give lashes an added zip in the curl. This is a wonderful alternative to mascara, as well as applying mascara after using the eyelash curler.

  • Makeup sponges are now readily available and inexpensive. Instead of using fingers to blend makeup, sponges make blending easier and give slightly heavier coverage.

  • With a sponge, dab makeup on the face, then blend downward toward the jaw line. The back of the hand serves as a great palette to pull the product off. Another option is to use free compact discs that come through the mail.

  • As cheap as sponges are, don't have to throw them away after one use. Use a palette to apply a small amount of baby shampoo to the sponge, then agitate in a small bowl of water to remove makeup. Allow several hours for sponges to dry. Sponges can be discarded after two to three weeks of washing and reusing.

  • Makeup brushes can also be cleaned with this method, but when drying, allow the bristles to extend beyond the edge of the countertop so that both the top and underside of the brush can dry.

  • Baby wipes do an excellent job of makeup removal one is on the go.
