These foods and portions represent a well-balanced, 2000-calorie diet in which 60 percent of the calories come from carbohydrates (lots of vegetables), 20 percent from protein, and 20 percent from fats.

Alternative-healthcare expert Majid Ali gives advice on balancing the proteins, carbohydrates and fats in your diet.
  • The three basic food groups are carbohydrates, which provide fuel; protein, which is used to build muscle and supply the brain; and fats, which cushion organs and affect hormones.

  • An average, 2000-calorie diet includes 60 percent of calories from carbohydrates, which include grains, starches, fruits and vegetables; 20 percent from protein, including fish, poultry, meat, and dairy; and 20 percent from fats, including nuts and olives as well as butters and oil.

  • Seventy percent of carbohydrates (which make up 60 percent of the total diet) should come from vegetables.

  • Consuming the proper balance of the food groups provides steady energy throughout the day--no naps necessary!

  • Instead of an egg-white omelet and sausage, which has too much protein, try adding a yolk to the omelet, omit the sausage and add toast.

  • Instead of three cups of spaghetti and sauce, substitute one cup pasta and a chicken breast.

  • Good snacks include edamame (soy beans) hummus, pita and celery.
