Fitness expert Greta Blackburn shows how to incorporate simple moves while we are walking--either outside or on a treadmill--that actually work toward slimming down your belly.
- Be sure to stay well hydrated during your walk to help flush fat from the body and burn calories.
Warm up by swinging a wet washcloth in either hand while you walk to create wind resistance (figure A).Add to the workload while walking (which helps burn more calories and fat) by pressing both arms to the ceiling, raising and lowering them in time with your stride. Focus on your posture and staying erect. Visualize pulling your belly button back against your spine.
For variety, hold your arms out at your sides at shoulder height and bend them at the elbow. Pull your elbows together in front of the body. Open and close your arms in time with your stride (figure B).For another variation, try bicep curls while you walk.Walk for at least 20 minutes, using the arm movements described.
To cool down, stand in a wide stance, bend at your waist and drop your head and shoulders down. Let everything hang loosely (figure C). Slowly raise up. Raise your arms overhead and drop down again. Roll up slowly.Do sit-ups after your walk if you desire.
