A quick look around the house could reveal some items that can be used when starting an exercise routine. For example, a large toolbox makes a handy step exerciser.
Personal trainer Jhannie Tolbert shares tips for beginning a fitness routine.
  • Try to pick the time for exercise that best fits into your daily schedule, whether it's before work or before bedtime. Don't feel locked into a time, though, and be prepared to adjust it to fit whatever comes up daily. It's more important to exercise than to do it at the scheduled time.

  • Start with 20 to 45 minutes a day, two or three days a week.

  • Think of exercise as fun and try not to refer to it as a workout. By keeping a positive attitude and thinking of it as fun, regular exercise will more easily become a part of a daily routine.

  • Before beginning any exercise program make sure to discuss it with your doctor.

  • Choose a comfortable place with soft carpet or grass to stand on. Concrete or hardwood floors could cause discomfort.

  • Start any exercise routine by stretching.

  • Start with light jogging in place, then build up to stepping exercises. A toolbox is an inexpensive substitute for real gym equipment.

  • Next go on to work the abdominal muscles with sit-ups. Do two sets of 15 each to start.

  • Use soup cans for some light weight training. Hold them in each hand, and work the arms and shoulders.

  • Keep holding the cans while doing squats to exercise the legs and lower body.
