Makeup artist Veronica Lorenz explains how to extend the life and versatility of makeup.

  • Foundation--Use the concentrated buildup on the rim or cap of the bottle as a concealer by applying with a brush. The more concentrated pigment provides heavier coverage.

  • Exfoliant--Make a paste of baking soda and water. Rub the mixture into the skin, avoiding the eye area. Rinse with warm water. This mixture can also be used to remove build up on the hair. Shampoo the hair as usual. Work the baking soda mixture into the hair and rinse. Follow with conditioner, if desired.

  • Cleanser--Do not overuse. If you cleanse at night, you don’t need to use more in the morning. Just splash your face with water before applying makeup.

  • Eyebrows--Thoroughly clean a used mascara brush. Add a dab of hair gel to the side of the hand (like a palette) and roll the brush in the gel (figure A). Apply gel to the eyebrows to set brow hair.

  • Eye shadow--If you break your powdered eye shadow or blush, dump the broken bits into a bowl. Hold a tea strainer over a sheet of wax paper and pour the makeup pieces into the strainer. Using the bottom of a blush brush, press the powder through the strainer (figure B). Pour the loose powder back into container. To make a cream from the powder, just add a dab of night cream to a small amount of the powder, and mix well before applying.

  • Lipstick--To extend your favorite lipstick or gloss, add a bit of petroleum jelly to it, either mixing on your hand before application, or on your lips after you have applied it.

  • Lips--Exfoliate your lips by making a cup of black tea with a tea bag, then rubbing the bag over your lips. The tannic acid will exfoliate and moisturize.
