Skin-care expert Amby Longhofer shows how to make all-natural exfoliating skin scrubs from basic kitchen ingredients like brown sugar, honey and eggs.
Exfoliation is the bottom line with skin care, she says. The skin becomes sluggish with dry cellular debris, which can make for a dull finish. You need to sluff away that dead skin, and these rubs help achieve that.
Oatmeal Facial Scrub
--for normal to dry skin
Materials:
1 cup plain instant oatmeal
1/2 cup honey
1 egg white
Steps:
- Crush whole oats with a mortar and pestle, or use the back of a spoon or chop with a knife.
- Mix thoroughly and apply to clean skin. Rub in for about two minutes. Allow to dry. This forces the moisture back onto the surface.
- Rinse off with water or jump in the shower to rinse off.
Notes
- Do NOT eat this mixture because it contains raw eggs.
- This scrub is safe to use on children.
- Do NOT put on sunburn skin.
Honey Almond Facial Scrub
--for normal to oily skin
Materials:
2 Tbs. almonds
1/2 cup honey
1 Tbs. lemon juice
Steps:
- Crush almonds with any of the methods described in the first projects.
- Combine almonds with the remainder of ingredients.
- Apply as in first project.
Notes
- Do not use this scrub in place of regular soap. It is meant to be used as a supplement.
- You could also use milk to cleanse skin.
Brown Sugar Body Scrub
--Use instead of salt scrubs, which can be drying or irritating to the skin if it is dry and/or sensitive.
Materials:
2 cups brown sugar
1 cup honey
3 Tbs. lemon juice
2 tsp. ginger
Steps:
- Grate fresh ginger, or use the powdered variety if fresh is not available.
- Take into the shower with you and apply handfuls at a time to polish the skin.
* Note: Should keep for several days in the refrigerator in a closed plastic container.
