Once you get proficient at making the soap, you can learn how to create several colorful and textured layers.
TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham demonstrates how to make loaf soap. It is a great gift idea. Simply wrap the in cellophane and decorate with ribbon.

Materials:

1 lb. glycerin or craft soap in smaller slivers, chunks and designs
2 to 3 pkgs. of soap curls
1 bottle of fragrance
kitchen knife
plastic wrap
loaf pan
cooking spray
glitter
food coloring
molds
rubbing alcohol

Steps:


  1. Melt a pound of clear glycerin or craft soap in a microwave. Put it on high for 40 seconds, stir, then melt again for 10 more seconds.

  • Continue to stir until all is melted, adding fragrance by the drop, until it is as strong as you like (figure A).

  • Add a few drops of food coloring or cosmetic-grade coloring to the soap.

  • Pour the mixture into a greased rectangular loaf pan or a mold purchased at a craft store (figure B).

  • Add soap chips by cutting chunks of clear glycerin (soap) and adding them to the pan. Spritzing chips with rubbing alcohol will allow the chips to adhere easier to the colored soap.

  • Let the soap cool for 45 to 60 minutes.

  • Use a bench knife to slice the loaf into 3/4-inch wide slices.

  • Make layered loaf soap by melting glycerin, separating and then coloring in two or more colors. Pour one color of soap into the pan and let cool.

  • After the first layer has cooled, spray with rubbing alcohol and add second colored layer.

  • Super-fine cosmetic glitter can also be added to the glycerin before cooling (figure C).
