Certified herbalist Stace Nelson provides several recipes for natural bath products that are safe for children.

Bubble Bath

Ingredients:

1 egg white
2 packs gelatin
1/3 cup castile soap
1 Tbs. sesame oil
several drops of lemon or raspberry essential oil

Preparation and Use:

Mix all ingredients thoroughly. Pour under a vigorous stream of water in the bathtub. This product won't bubble up like some commercial products, but the chemicals in these products are what produces the volume of bubbles. This makes the natural bubble bath a great alternative.

Shampoo

Ingredients:

1 oz. lemon-balm herb infusion
1 tsp. avocado oil
several drops of essential lavender oil
12 oz. water

Preparation and Use:

Create the herb infusion, straining the herbs from the liquid. Add infusion to a spray bottle, along with all other ingredients and spray over your child's hair to wash. This won't lather like a commercial shampoo but should still be treated like one. Simply work into a wet head of hair, then rinse thoroughly.

Conditioner

Ingredients:

2 oz. almond oil
1/2 oz. avocado oil
1 tsp. wheat-germ oil
12 drops calendula oil
15 drops rose geranium oil

Preparation and Use:

Thoroughly mix all ingredients in a plastic bottle. Work into the child's scalp, running it down through the strands of hair. Rinse well.

Baby Powder

Ingredients:

1 cup cornstarch
1/4 cup ground chamomile
1/4 cup ground lavender

Preparation and Use:

Mix all ingredients well. Use as you would baby powder. Store in a tightly-sealed container in a cool, dry place.
