Stepladder CD Holder

Transform a wooden stepladder into a compact disc holder by adding a top--either a tray or piece of glass--and a brace to keep the CDs in place.

Materials:

stepladder
tray or piece of glass
wooden brace
measuring tape
L-bracket
paint
screws

Steps:

  1. Clean the ladder thoroughly.

  2. Add a wooden brace on the inside of the ladder just above each step.
  3. Measure the brace width separately for each step, because they will be different (figure A).

  4. Position the brace at the right height to keep the CDs from falling through. Attach with an L-bracket.

  5. Finish with paint.

  6. Attach the top with screws.
Three-Tier Holder

Materials:

3 sizes of clay pots, from small to large
2 pieces of pipe that extend a few inches above the top of the bottom and middle pots
3 flanges to hold the pipe
3 saucers to hide the flanges
grinding bit
metal file
drill
multi-purpose adhesive or two-part epoxy

Steps:

  1. Select the pots.

Figure B
  • Gather together the pipes, flanges and saucers (figure B).

  • Select the flange, which comes in a limited number of sizes, and then use the diameter pipe that fits the flange.

  • Enlarge the hole in the bottom of the largest pot with a grinding bit. The hole size should correspond to the hole size of the flange. File with a metal file to get rid of bumps or rough spots.

  • Drill the same size hole for the saucer.

  • Using a multi-purpose adhesive (metal to terra cotta) or two-part epoxy, run a bead of adhesive around the outer edge of the bottom on the pot and attach the flange.

  • Run a bead of adhesive around the inside of the saucer and set it over the flange so that the flange is hidden. Let dry, following the instructions on the package.

  • Repeat the process for the middle and top pots, grinding out the holes and attaching the flange and saucer.

  • After the adhesive has dried, assemble the pots, screwing in the longest pipe piece into the flange on the largest pot.

  • Screw the medium pot onto the top of the pipe and add the next piece of pipe.

  • Screw the smallest pot on last.

  • You can paint or color wash the pots, if desired.
  • Basket Holder

Attach a fishing basket (or any size basket) below a window as a handy holder for flowers, newspapers or other household items (see photo above). Add wooden dividers if desired, to make shelves.
