Make your bag easier to identify by attaching a brightly colored tag to the handle, or just by adding strips of colorful tape.

Organizational expert Louis Kurzeka provides tips on how to avoid losing your luggage.

  • Avoid putting valuables such as jewelry into checked luggage. Lost luggage happens, but don't tempt fate.

  • Before you go on a trip, make sure that your luggage is in good condition and is not ripped or torn. Also, be sure all the snaps and zippers work correctly.

  • If you're traveling with your family, don't pack all of your clothes in one bag, all of your son's in another and so on. Divide each family member's wardrobe among several bags. That way if one bag is lost everyone still has something to wear.

  • Do not put breakable items in the outside pockets of your suitcase.

  • Include an extra pair of underwear, a change of clothes and a toothbrush in your carryon bag. At least you'll have a bit of a backup if your luggage goes into hiding.

  • Choose one small carryon bag that can double as your daypack when you're on vacation.

  • Peel off any old baggage claim/transit tickets to avoid confusion as to where your luggage is going on the current trip.

  • A lot of bags look similar. Make sure to identify and grab the right bag off the luggage carousel.

  • Arrive at the airport on time to ensure that both you and your luggage make it onto the plane.

  • Remove all detachable straps before checking bags. A dangling strap can easily catch on a piece of machinery at some point and cause your bag to be damaged or lost.
