Too Close for Comfort

Mission: Organization : Episode MSO-302 -- More Projects »
Pam and Kai Madsen have lived in the same, one-bedroom apartment for 22 years, which they share with their two sons, 15-year-old Tyler, and 11-year-old Spencer. This close-knit family's living space is bursting at the seams because no one seems to be able to throw anything away. For example, Kai keeps a 20-year-old piece of telegraph equipment that needs restoring, while Pam hangs onto things like a saddle she hasn't used in 20 years.

The living room is a dumping ground for bicycles, books and Kai's portable office. Every inch of empty space is fair game for anyone in the family. Take a look:

Before: The living room is dubbed the garage since it is used for bike storage as well as 22 years' worth of books, clothing and musical instruments. Nothing that enters this apartment ever leaves.

After: The new "garage area" entryway now houses a dark-brown cabinet with four drawers, one for each member of the family. The overflowing bookcases and stored bikes are gone for good.
