Installing a shelf is an easy way to add versatile storage space.
Home expert Ben Allen shows how to add decorative storage space to any room by installing open shelves.

Making a Shelf

Materials:

4 pieces of 1" x 8" lumber (any length for the size shelf you want)
adjustable clamp
12 screws
power drill
screwdriver
wood putty
150-grit sandpaper
keyhole hangers

Steps:

  1. The shelf can be any size you like, but for this example, a rectangular shelf is constructed. There will be two long pieces of wood and two short ones.

Figure B
  • Attach the two longer pieces to a short piece of wood (figure A) by utilizing an adjustable clamp to secure the wood together.

  • Screws should be inserted with the aid of a power drill. Make sure the head of the screw is flush with the wood (figure B) by countersinking the screw. Drill a hole the width and length of the screw, then make a divot in the wood so that the screw is flush.

  • Once the screws are in, cover with a small amount of wood putty so that the area is flush and ready for painting.

  • Add the other short piece of wood to finish the rectangle shape. Once all screws are tight and in place, smooth the wood with sandpaper.

  • Add keyhole hangers by chiseling an area on each edge to accommodate each one (figure C).
