Organization expert Louise Kurzeka explains how to make a message board out of household items.
- Purchase your board at a home store or builder's store. Pick out the size you want, and an employee will usually cut it for you.
- Cut fabric. You might want to pick up pinking shears for a perforated look. Choose a piece that is two inches larger than your board so that you will have enough room to fold over and staple. To measure the correct amount, place your board on top of the fabric, leaving six to eight inches in excess fabric on each side.
- Center your board on the opposite side of the fabric you want to show.
- Wrap your board and pull it taught. Start at the center of each side and staple to the corner, keep the staples a width of one inch apart. Hold the opposite side you are not stapling taught, as you staple. Fold corners over and trim excess fabric.
- Use 1-1/2-inch ribbon around the border. Leave a six-inch ribbon excess to fold over the back of the board and staple. Use small amounts of glue, and dot the ribbon to the fabric.
- Use elastic ribbon approximately 1/4-inch thick to make a crisscross pattern. Form a diamond on the board, then place elastic ribbon to form cross. Use pushpins or tacks to pin the ribbon to the board.
- For keyholders, place cup hooks on your board. Screw into bottom of the board and hang your keys on it.
- To keep the staples from rubbing on your wall, cover them with self-adhesive felt dots.
- To make your own message tacks, take pushpins and glue on mismatched buttons. Use a strong, clear, drying glue. Craft stores and fabric stores have a variety of buttons. Feel free to use different shapes and sizes.
- Place family photos, messages, etc., between the elastic ribbon, or use a tack.
- You can also frame the board to make to make it more elaborate.
