Organize Your Car

TIPical Mary Ellen : Episode TIP-247 -- More Projects »
Pam Hix offers tips on how to efficiently organize a car.

  • Use hair clips or spring binders to keep a list of emergency numbers above the visor.

  • A list of things to keep in the glove compartment are as follows:

    • driver's manual
    • pocket knife
    • logbook of repairs
    • tire gauge
    • insurance card
    • any other items often needed

  • A list of things to keep on the drivers side of the car are as follows:

    • maps
    • cellular phone
    • notepad
    • pen

  • Keep small safety items in a plastic box container with bungee cords around the lid. Another option is to keep small items packed together in a duffel bag or backpack.

  • Keep items that may roll around in a heavy canvas bag that will fit inside the spare tire.

  • Have plastic bags available for storing trash. Discard and replace weekly.

  • To prevent having ashes that continue to burn in the car ashtray, place an inch of baking soda or gravel in the bottom of the tray. The baking soda also helps remove the smoke smell.

  • Make your own washer solvent that won't freeze. Combine one quart rubbing alcohol, one cup water and two tablespoons of liquid detergent. This formula is guaranteed not to freeze down to 35 degrees below zero.

  • Put a large rubber band around the sun visor, and keep maps and parking stubs on the back so they are in easy reach when needed.

  • Find a small tote bag for carrying things to and from the car.

  • Keep baby wipes in your car for cleaning your hands after pumping gas or adding/checking oil.

  • If you are a nonsmoker, utilize the extra space you have by putting spare change in the ashtray. It will always be there when you need change for a pay phone or parking meter.
