Organizing Closets
Smart Solutions : Episode SSL-607 -- More Projects »
Author Donna Smallin explains how to efficiently organize closets and drawers.
- The first thing to do with a messy closet is to pare down the wardrobe. Pick out the clothes that you wear on a regular basis and donate the rest. This isn't the easiest solution, but it is by far the most practical. A year is the smartest timeframe to keep--if you haven't worn it in the past year, toss it.
Create storage space in a closet by using a broomstick and two stepladders (figure A) or any other similar objects. Use this as an instant rack for clothing in a spare room, garage or dry basement. Cover items that are out-of-season with dry-cleaner bags.
Once the closet has some room, add shelves (figure B) for items that you use on a regular basis. This will provide extra space for handbags, shoes or those items that may have been on the floor before.Take an instant photograph on your shoes and glue it to the front of the shoebox to identify what's inside.String shower curtain rings from clothes hangers to hold items such as scarves and belts.
A shoe bag can be used for holding pantyhose and socks (figure C). This method eliminates the chance of your socks losing their elasticity from bundling them together.Ice-cube trays are perfect for storing jewelry.
