Designer Darren Ransdell explains how to turn countertops, a spare table or nook into a functional office home.

  • Have a cutting board cut to size at your local lumber facility and drop it into your sink to provide two feet of working space on your counter.

  • Add a strip light under your cabinets for quick and easy task lighting if you use your counter for a workspace.

  • Use a glass to hold pencils and pens.

  • Use a closet as a mini room for an office. Paint it a great color and put all your office supplies inside.

  • Use a tower spice rack, which is tall and thin, to hold supplies such as paper clips, push pins and rubber bands in a small closet office.

  • Try using a tall flower bucket tucked back in the closet corner for a waste can.

  • Use an attractive picnic basket for storing office supplies (figure A). Just grab the basket and move it to a table or counter when you are ready to get to work.

  • Buy a magnetic strip or two and use them to hang supplies such as letter openers, scissors and paper clips on the splash (figure B).

  • Attach cork rounds that are used underneath plants to the inside of the closet door to use as a cork board.
