Lora and Jamie Showalter's home office and garage are full of clutter. With two children and full-time jobs, organization has taken a back seat. But they are ready to change all that. They are tired of not being able to locate things and are anxious to be able to park more than one car in their three-car garage. The Office

The home office is shared by the Showalters, but Lora has never felt comfortable in the room.

Jamie picked out all the heavy oak furniture in the office, which Lora says is masculine and uninviting. Clutter is overtaking the room, including equipment cords on top of the desk that take up valuable workspace.

In addition, the furniture is too large for the room, which creates an awkward flow. The first step in getting this room organized is to sort through everything, establish what needs to be kept, and create categories for those items.

Hanby-Robie suggests adding color and texture to the room with wallpaper to open it up and make it less masculine. A rug found in a closet helps establish a warm, inviting color theme, and a rich green damask wallpaper is selected. After rearranging the furniture for a more work-conducive floor plan and removing some unneeded pieces, the Showalters' once-cramped, messy office is now airy and organized.

The Garage

Their three-car garage is full of boxes with products and literature that Lora gets from her job, and Jamie wants his parking spot back. There's nearly 400 square feet of space in the garage, and Barrett thinks most of the space is being wasted.

A prime example of wasted wall space.

Shelving specialist Skip Barrett has a heavy-duty paneling system installed to help get items off the floor and take advantage of all that wall space. It's waterproof, impervious to insects and features horizontal grooves every three inches. Modular accessories can be added/removed as needed, so all agree it's a great long-term solution.

... and even a wall mounting for her small office supplies.
Jamie is especially pleased with the new garage, saying that "the organizational level has quadrupled." Plus, they can fit not one but two cars in the garage, and there's still some play room left for the two children.

Tools and knickknacks are hung neatly on the wall and in bins.

There is a roomy storage cabinet for household supplies.

These wire baskets are at a child-friendly height so that even the children can help keep the garage neat.
