Matt Fox shares these pointers for organizing all the cords and cables on today 's home office and entertainment equipment:
  • Use a surge protector plugged directly into a grounded outlet to make sure computers , stereos and televisions are plugged in safely. They protect sensitive home and office equipment from harmful power surges and spikes. Look for wall models that eliminate trying to find space for a floor protector.
  • Try to keep each unit's cords together using cable straps or plastic ties like electricians use, which are less expensive. Cable clips are a little sturdier and attach to a desk or along a baseboard with an adhesive that won't damage walls or furniture (figure A).
  • To route a lot of cables for devices, cable tunnels discreetly hold up to 14 cords in place (figure B).
