TIPical Mary Ellen host Mary Ellen Pinkham and organization expert Pam Hix discuss a variety of options for maintaining paper security in the home.
- Don't treat credit card receipts casually. Shred them as soon as possible.
- Keep financial documents in a safety deposit box at the bank or in a fire-safe box. When storing in the fire-safe box, remember to keep the box locked at all times.
- Other items that should be stored in a safety deposit or fire-safe box are the following:
- infrequently used credit cards
- Social Security cards
- mortgage papers and other financial papers (stocks, trusts, bonds)
- insurance papers
- contracts, leases
- proof-of-ownership papers
- tax returns
- automobile titles
- list of household inventory with photos of all items
- wills
- family papers
- military papers
- birth, adoption, marriage, divorce or death certificates
- a list of what is stored in a safety deposit box at the bank
- photocopies of weekly check registers
- negatives of family photos
