  • Don't treat credit card receipts casually. Shred them as soon as possible.

  • Keep financial documents in a safety deposit box at the bank or in a fire-safe box. When storing in the fire-safe box, remember to keep the box locked at all times.

  • Other items that should be stored in a safety deposit or fire-safe box are the following:

    • infrequently used credit cards
    • Social Security cards
    • mortgage papers and other financial papers (stocks, trusts, bonds)
    • insurance papers
    • contracts, leases
    • proof-of-ownership papers
    • tax returns
    • automobile titles
    • list of household inventory with photos of all items
    • wills
    • family papers
    • military papers
    • birth, adoption, marriage, divorce or death certificates
    • a list of what is stored in a safety deposit box at the bank
    • photocopies of weekly check registers
    • negatives of family photos
