When ordering something through the mail, look for a small box at the bottom of the order form that tells the company that you do not want them sharing your information. Check this box and you should not receive any advertising from them.

Organizing expert Pam Hix shares tips for stopping junk mail and phone solicitations.

  • When filling out warranty cards, always write at the top "Please do not sell my name or address."

  • Open everything you get in the mailbox.

  • Write "return to sender" on junk-mail envelopes and put them back in the mail. To streamline the process, print out some labels telling junk-mail culprits to remove you from their mailing list. Stick these on reply forms and mail them back.

  • Do not sign up for any magazine sweepstakes.

  • If you order something over the phone from a catalog, ask that they do not sell your name to another company.

  • Before you pass on or recycle a catalog, take off your address and rip out the order form.

  • Phone solicitors are required to remove you from their list if you make such a request. Tell unwanted phone solicitors this when they call.

  • If all else fails, write an official letter to the offending solicitors.
