Kitchen/Mudroom Makeover

Mission: Organization : Episode MSO-203 -- More Projects »
Jennifer Moorehead is a busy woman whose career doubles as a mom and business owner. Both are growing rapidly, as is the mess in her home.

She's so disorganized she often buys a replacement item for something she knows she has but cannot find. Plus, she's running out of storage space. Interior designer Melanie Mattes and organizational consultant Diane Comly step in to help.

Before

The mudroom, which doubles as a laundry area, is cluttered and small. Moorehead's three children come in and out this way, so things get tossed around regularly.

The kitchen is the other problem area. Not only is it messy, but it is also the spot where all of her flea-market finds end up. There isn't much space to use the room as a gathering place for meals.

The china cabinet/hutch (at left) is too small to hold all of her collectibles and flea-market finds ...

... so the dining-room corner is currently home to some of those treasures.

There is so little order in the kitchen cabinets and drawers that telephones, crayons and vitamins are all jumbled together.

Mixing bowls are stored next to skateboard wheels in this drawer.
The Plan

Mattes plans to move the laundry area out of mudroom and down into family room to open up the mudroom and get it organized. She also wants to turn the coat closet in the kitchen into a pantry, which will make much more room for the children's cereal, snacks and other kitchen products. The central idea is to make each area calming, rather than chaotic.

Contractor Rusty Maxwell in enlisted for the construction, but before that can begin, Comly helps Moorehead clear out/sort through all the items in each "problem" room.

Mudroom
Moorehead decided to paint the wide-planked floor underneath the carpet in mudroom, rather than cover it back up with carpet. There's also an organized cubby area for everyone's coats, knickknacks and supplies.

Kitchen

Feast your eyes on the new-and-improved kitchen! It's complete with a larger dining-room table and chairs, a glass-front hutch for displaying decorative items and kitchen island with a dozen drawers.
PHOTO

Laundry Room
The new laundry room is in a bright room just off the family room. A spare cabinet has been mounted for storage. The whole unit was turned to allow the drawers to be on bottom within reach.
PHOTO

The cubby and bin system in the mudroom includes a personalized area for each member of the family as well as individual baskets above for additional items. When the bins get full, each person is in charge of putting away his or her own things. There's even some extra baskets for things like gift-wrapping supplies.
PHOTO
The new kitchen island breaks up that long, narrow space and not only is a great work surface, but it is also a wonderful storage area. Just look at all those drawers!
PHOTO

This large kitchen table and chairs with decorative seat cushions replaces the two smaller tables that were in the dining area and kitchen. Now there's plenty of room for those extra kids that always seem to be visiting.
PHOTO
The old coat closet became this custom-built pantry. Instead of a door, Mattes opted for a softer look with curtains that match the rest of the room's decor.
PHOTO

This roomy china cabinet/hutch displays Moorehead's collectibles and flea-market finds beautifully and is covered by glass to both protect the items and keep her from dusting as frequently. There's even room on top for more items.

The laundry area now houses bins to help the family separate their whites and colors.
The Mooreheads are thrilled with their home's new look and vow to keep it organized and orderly.

Designer's/Organizer's Tips

  • Make an individual bin for each sport.

  • Adjust cereal and snack shelves to a kid-friendly height.

  • Create a station for your favorite beverage.

  • Create a baking center.

  • Limit yourself to one junk drawer.
