Marrying Two Lives Into One

The Kitchen

Sabalaske's got lofty goals for this room, including creating more cabinet space by adjusting the existing shelves, putting up shelf extenders, and finding a home for every item in the kitchen.

Sabalaske wants to replace the large kitchen table beneath this clutter with something more practical and mobile to free up space.

She believes that adding shelves in the kitchen cabinets will make better use of all what she considers wasted vertical space.

A butcher-block island with wheels was placed in the corner where the kitchen table was, and a hanging pot rack and wall-storage unit for utensils and kitchen accessories frees up valuable floor space.

Hooks were placed underneath the cabinets for Erin's large coffee-mug collection. This not only saves space inside the cabinets, but it also adds a touch of color to the room.

Small changes like adding inexpensive wire shelf extenders inside those kitchen cabinets allows for the creation of multiple shelves in one space.
The pantry area to the right of the refrigerator was another area that seemed to make poor use of its allotted space, according to Sabalaske.

The refrigerator and shelf unit next to it are packed with appliances and other kitchen items in no particular order, and food is too close to pets' reach.
Photo

Sabalaske moved all food three feet off floor into decorative, yet functional baskets, and all the snack foods are stored in doggie-proof containers.

The valuable storage space next to the dishwasher is now organized with compartmentalized pullout drawers and even a lid holder (top right) mounted inside.

With all these changes, The Saulinos managed to double the storage space in their kitchen to free up the floor and counter space.
Sabalaske's Tips

  • Place popular items in a prime place.

  • Save time by putting all morning essentials in one place.
