- Store glasses such as stemware by placing every other glass upside down (figure A). Be sure to line the shelves so that the rims of the glasses are not touching the bottom of the cabinet.
- Group like items together. For instance, create a breakfast center that contains the toaster, breadbox, cereals, teapot and other items. Stock a snack area with a popcorn maker, popcorn, paper plates and cups (figure B).
- Place bookshelves or bookcases in the kitchen as a place to store glassware, cookbooks, canisters, hand mixers or even food (figure C). This will also provide handy places to set small appliances.
- A pegboard can easily hold gadgets, pots and pans. Paint or cover the pegboard to match the kitchen (figure D).
- Arrange a communication center by placing a bulletin board near the telephone, and put up some shelves to hold cookbooks, telephone books, pens, paper and other supplies.
- Store items nearby for easy reach. Keep wooden spoons and spatulas close to the stove.
- Store dishes and silverware near the dishwasher or sink.
- Make a decorative display with cookie cutters by tying them with ribbon and hanging them from a hook.
- Try storing other items in a decorative way. Use colored glass jars for pasta, antique tins for dry mixes or a collection of baskets for storing items that are not frequently used.
- Buy some wire racks with legs to add more storage space to high cabinets. Pullout drawers or racks work great for easy retrieval of items in lower cabinets.
